Chicago property tax appeal

A Chicago property tax appeal goes to Cook County, which assesses Chicago homes: first the Cook County Assessor, then the Cook County Board of Review. The city is split into 8 assessment townships, and each has its own 2026 dates. Filing is free at both stages.

How to appeal a Chicago property assessment

  1. Find your township's window on your notice or the Assessor's calendar.

  2. Compare your home with similar homes in your assessment neighborhood. If you use comparable homes at the Assessor, include at least 3 (5 recommended).

  3. File with the Assessor online by the closing date, with all evidence. Late appeals are not accepted.

  4. File with the Board of Review when it opens your township, whether or not you appealed to the Assessor.
